I am so sorry to hear that David Payne passed away. He was a wonderful human being. I will never forget when we were at a practice and I think Steve Moore threw the ball from 3rd to first and David was on the mound. He stepped right into the ball's path and he took a severe blow to the head. Fortunately he survived and was able to pitch again. I went down the Gila river once with our honeys and another occasion we went rabbit hunting in the Rincon mountains.
If anyone knows the circumstances of his death I would very much like to know. I googled his obituary with no luck.
My understanding is that David was killed with several others in an airplane crash only a few years after graduating. It might have been a group of forest service employees.
This is unexpected. Dave was always going to go on to be a geneticist. At least that is my memory of him. He and I weren't in too many classes together, but in biology he was one smart dude. I don't recall if he and I were even in biology together! He was easy to talk to and not the least pretentious. A good guy.
David was a neighbor of mine since 4th grade. He was always the gentleman. It is sad to see him gone at such an early age. He was one of the good guys.

Killed in the line of duty as a forest service firefighter. He was a true gem of a guy!
